Believe in your child’s potential.

By Marcus Ong (Senior Tuition Coordinator, We Care Tuition Agency)

In my years as a tuition agent, I have come across different clients with different requests for tutors. Some asked for top-class tutors regardless of price and others requested for budget-constraint tutors. I was able to match tutors to students accordingly to the parents’ requests. However, I followed up on the progress of the cases and I was amazed by the results of the tuition sessions.

Obviously, the qualities of the tutors sent played a vital role to decide the final outcome if the child managed to clear the exams. Another crucial point is the attitudes of the students. Those who desired to do well eventually did well with the help of the tutors. On the other hand, the unmotivated ones continued to struggle academically. The question is what determined the attitudes of the learners or how can we change the attitudes displayed?

From my keen observations over the years, the answer is very simple. The learner’s attitude is tied closely to the parent’s belief systems. Those who did well had something in common. The parents of these students never give up believing in their children. Unconditional love coupled with encouraging words is the magical tools to help these children overcome all odds. In fact, these children were motivated because they knew that their parents believe in their potential. Harsh words were never used to make them feel small. On the other hand, I have seen how some parents scolded their own children before their friends for not being able to do as well academically as their friends’ kids This is very damaging in the long run as the child will give up trying after some time. A tutor cannot perform magic if the parent continues to speak “curses” into the lives of their own children. My advice will be to be more generous with praise and stingy with criticisms in the formative years of a young child’s live. It will make a great difference in the long run.

Getting a good tutor is the hardware but the heart ware comes from the parent. Do you believe your child can do it honestly? A child is not stupid and he can feel how you really feel in your heart. I will suggest that the heart ware need to be right before a tutor can come in to provide the help for your child. Do something for me and for your child today. Walk to your child now and look into his eyes. Say to him “I believe you can do it and I love you always”. Trust me that it will change your child’s live forever knowing that you are with him every step he takes in life. Have a nice day and do visit

What makes a Quality Home Tutor?

I would like to share my point of view in qualifying a quality home tutor. In my interactions with parents, students and tutors, I have gained insights into the realm of home tuition and its mechanics.

Home tuition tends to cost more than group tuition, hence there is more unscrutinizing in private tutors. As home tutors are giving one-to-one assistance to students, their teachings are more focused onto the students' minds and there is also the transfer of values and habits subconsciously.

To me, a Quality Home Tutor must be one that is able to establish rapport with the student. This means being able to connect and speak in the same language. Once the tutor and the student can connect to each other, there will be effective communication and effective impartation of useful knowledge.

The Quality Home Tutor must also be a strong motivator. In most cases, students need home tuition because they are not faring well in the subjects they sought tuition assistance for. In group tuition, these students might face stress from the good performance rest of the students. This might lead to students wanting to give up on themselves. In home tuition, the tutor's role as a motivator comes in. There will be moments when the student will not understand the topic and start to shift his mind away. The tutor should set in and encourage him and push him on. Maintaining a positive healthy mindset is crucial to a child's performance in school.
The Tutor should be one that has passion in teaching and has a desire to help students soar in their grades. He should not see tutoring as a job. With these criteria met, he would be willing to stay behind after the tuition lesson and update the parents and student on the academic progress of the student. He should take the proactive approach to do this form of updating. With proper tracking of progress, the tutor can then be more certain on his teaching style and pace.
To sum up my views, a Quality Home Tutor isn't just one that is an expert on his field of teaching, but more importantly, it is the method of his sharing of knowledge that determines the quality factor.

Qualities of a good tutor

Parents hire tutors with expectations in mind and most tutors may fall short of the parents’ expectations. In many instances, there may be problems over the long run if the parents and tutors fail to communicate well. Obviously, the parents are the customers and the tutors have to try their best to satisfy the requirements of the parents. The question is what are most parents looking out for?

The attitude of the tutor is the most important above all others that I am going to cover. A good tutor should display genuine care and concern for the student under his charge. Many tutors merely regarding tutoring as a part time job but I will like to highlight that the parents have entrusted their children to the tutors because they hope that the tutors can help to improve the grades of their children, hence, I suggest that all tutors should be encouraging to the students under their charge and try your best to help the child academically. Make a difference in the lives of the students and I believe that the students will come to thank you in the years to come.
The second pointer is obviously the appearance of the tutor. For your first lesson at least, you should be dressed correctly so that you portray a professional image. There is no need to over-dress but do remember smart informal will be good. You will always be judged when you first appear at the student’s house and you will have to make sure you pass the first test.
Knowledge is power. This is the deciding factor especially when you are tasked top teach higher levels where you will need to explain difficult concepts to the students. There is no way to hide your inadequacy if you have a poor grasp of the content knowledge. You will have to admit that with the changes in the syllabus, you have to read up. Do not be complacent especially with the use of internet; students may know more than you do.

Delivery of the knowledge is the final test of how good you really are. University professors are famous for being rich in knowledge but poor at delivering that lectures sometimes sound like an ancient Latin class. You can do better than most professors if you take note of certain pointers. Obviously, you have to watch your tone of voice, speed and clarity of language. Always use lay man terms as far as possible when you are explaining concepts which are cluttered with difficult English words. Remember, simplify and do not make the cardinal sin of reading from the textbooks. There are boring tutors who will do that and the tuition sessions will turn up to be frightening reading classes. You can be sure to get the boot soon if you persist in this ancient mode of teaching.

In search of the best tutors, parents will and can pay good fees. In order to command a high fee, you will have to prove that you are really good. You can be sure that tutoring is rewarding when you established yourself as the guru tutor in a specific field.

What should you expect from your tutor?

What should you expect from your tutor?
By Marcus Ong (Senior Tuition Coordinator, We Care Tuition Agency)

If you are searching for a tutor now, you should consider how you should make a wise selection of a tutor so that your expectations are met. There are several tuition agencies in Singapore that offers matching services of tutors to students. With the wide range of tutors you will need to consider carefully the best choice of tutor for your child so that you get the maximum benefits.

Qualifications of Tutor

You will need to know how qualified your tutor is before you can hire the tutor. Obviously, you do not expect an O levels holder to teach a JC student. Trust is good but I suggest caution is the best solution. Always verify the identity of the tutor who turns up for tuition using the following method. You should verify the credentials against the identity card of the tutor to be sure that the tuition agency has sent the correct person to your place. You do not wish to find out only after your child’s exams that your tutor is less qualified than expected. Ask confidently and you should really be cautious of agencies that refuse to accede to your request or tutors who keep forgetting to bring their documents down to your place. All these are warning signs that your tutor may not be qualified to teach at all.

Charges of Tutor

Different tutors have different charges just as lawyers and other professionals. The trained teachers definitely command the highest fees because they are familiar of the syllabus and will be able to help your child navigate through the syllabus with little ease. The good ones are able to inspire at the same time and they will know which areas are commonly tested in exams. Thus, we cannot expect such tutors to be cheap because cheap tutors are usually cheap for a reason in the first place. Thus, you may like to ask the tuition agency to explain why a tutor is charging a certain fee. You may like visit our site too at
www.wecaretuition.com to understand the different charges of tutors.

Your tuition budget.

When you hire the services of a tuition agency, you should be honest about your budget for tuition so that the correct tutor can be allocated to you. With other financial demands on your family, I feel that there is no need to spend a bomb on tuition alone. In most instances, the tuition coordinators will advise you accordingly the type of tutor you can hire based on your budget. For example, our agency
www.wecaretuition.com believes in value for money. All the coordinators are trained well to send the correct tutor down for each budget given.

Tutor’s style

This is the most important factor that you will have to consider. You will need to know which style of teaching suits your child best. Do you want your tutor to drill your child or you like your tutor to do a question and answer-based methodology? Do you like your tutor to replace your child’s teacher completely or you just like your tutor to complement your child’s teacher. You will need to be honest so that the correct tutor can be matched to your child. Remember, all children have different learning styles and you will need the tutor to help you discover your child’s learning style.

Why hire a tutor? (Students’ Version)

Why hire a tutor? (Students’ Version)

By Janice Pang, Tuition Coordinator

“Mummy, can I not go to school please?” Does that sound like you, just years ago, when you were still a child, tearing away on the first day of school in nursery? Or does this sound more like you, a young adult now, either passing with flying colours or struggling with utmost difficulty in studies – “Mum, can we not hire a tutor?”

Since young till now, education has been both a stress and a fear factor to me and I believe this is the case for many others as well. With the pressure of attaining good grades weighing on you and the dread of being laughed at when results showed otherwise despite the efforts put in, what attitude do you use towards education? How do you face the tutors who seem to intensify the situation?

As a result, most students get turned off when the parents bring up the topic of hiring a tutor for them. Why? Simply because they do not need any more people to add on to the hopes pin on them to do well. In this long and tiring journey, many are lonely and what they wish for is just someone who can understand their inner world and reach out to them. This is exactly why you should hire a tutor!

While the emphasis placed in academic results is high, majority of the tutors are concerned about the mental welfare of their students as well. Think about it, in a class of about 30 people, how would the school teacher be able to dedicate full attention to just a student alone? However, the scenario is now different when you hire a tutor. In one-to-one tuition, the tutor can now spend more quality time with the student and bond closely to the student. From being a guider who aids you in scoring, you will now have a friend to confide in. Wouldn’t this be the simplest yet most important reason why you should hire a tutor – for company through this tough journey?

With that, I would recommend you to visit http://www.wecaretuition.com today to find the right tutor for yourself!

Why hire a tutor? (Parents’ Version)

Why hire a tutor? (Parents’ Version)

By Janice Pang, Operations Director, We Care Tuition Agency.

I may not be a parent myself but I have definitely witnessed the hassle parents have to go through to find the most suitable tutor for their children. As the old saying goes, all parents want the best for their children and this explains why most parents are willing to spend a bomb on their children’s future - education.

So what is holding the parents back from giving their children the best? The answer is simple – bad experience. As an agent, I have often received calls from parents who confided in us about their encounters with awful tutors. Some tutors were liars in disguise while some were money grubbers in the eyes of the parents. Indeed, I sympathise with parents who have become victims of deception. On the other hand, I feel that there is a need to clear the names for all the other innocent tutors out there.

It is true that there are tutors who cheat parents for personal reasons but there are also tutors who teach their students with sincerity and passion. Therefore, I sincerely urge parents who had bad experience before, to believe in the tutors once again. In fact, parents can now rest assured because the tuition agencies will vet through the particulars of the tutors and ensure there is nothing amiss before attaching the tutors to the families.

I have also come up with a few tips as to how parents can judge whether the tutors are suitable candidates for their children.

Tip No.1: You should be able to have a phone interview with the tutors before deciding to hire them.

Tip No.2: The tutors should be able to produce evidence regarding their qualifications. For example, they should bring their certificates down to verify during the first lesson.

Tip No.3: The tutors are recommended by the agents for doing a good job in previous assignments or enjoy a fine reputation – reliability is backed up by the agents.

With these three simple tips, parents can now relax and end their fears about getting horrible tutors again. I hope this article has been useful in one way or another and thank you for reading till the end. Do visit www.wecaretuition.com to enquire more about hiring of quality and dependable tutors.

Why Hire a Tutor?

Why Hire a Tutor?
By Marcus Ong (Senior Tuition Coordinator, We Care Tuition Agency)

Tutors are hired to guide students who may have difficulties catching up in schools. In a school context, it is impossible for a teacher to dedicate full attention to any single student. A tutor may be needed to help a student at a pace suitable for the student. However, before we hire a tutor we need to understand the special needs of our children.

Tutors cannot replace hard work on the part of the student and every student should understand that the tutor will complement the teacher in the school and not to replace the teacher totally. Experienced tutors will also give your child an added advantage especially those who are familiar with the changes in the syllabus. In the Singapore context, the changes in the syllabus can make it a challenge for parents to follow closely. A good tutor can fill the gap well by designing a comprehensive revision programme which is exam orientated.

In many instances, our agency www.wecaretuition.com enhanced a child’s grade through the matching of a suitable tutor who can add value gradually. Many parents may think that schools have remedial programmes for their children to seek help from. However, remedial programmes may not be effective because of the large groups involved. The teacher cannot give individual attention and the progress may be slow. Also, such remedial programmes are scheduled after school hours and your child may be too tired even to concentrate. This is where a good tutor can come in to fill in the gap. Parents may want to take preventive measures when you realize that the grades are falling.

Perhaps, I like to use an analogy to emphasis on the role of a tutor in a child’s academic journey. In an ancient battle, the warrior has a spear and a shield to fight effectively. A teacher in school is like a child’s spear but more children has no shield to fall back. Give your child a shield today by getting him a tutor so that he can fight a good battle out there in the ever changing academic arena. In my next article, I will discuss more on how to choose the correct tutor and what services you should expect from a tuition agency. Meanwhile, do pop by our site at http://www.wecaretuition.com to read other articles too.
