Believe in your child’s potential.

By Marcus Ong (Senior Tuition Coordinator, We Care Tuition Agency)

In my years as a tuition agent, I have come across different clients with different requests for tutors. Some asked for top-class tutors regardless of price and others requested for budget-constraint tutors. I was able to match tutors to students accordingly to the parents’ requests. However, I followed up on the progress of the cases and I was amazed by the results of the tuition sessions.

Obviously, the qualities of the tutors sent played a vital role to decide the final outcome if the child managed to clear the exams. Another crucial point is the attitudes of the students. Those who desired to do well eventually did well with the help of the tutors. On the other hand, the unmotivated ones continued to struggle academically. The question is what determined the attitudes of the learners or how can we change the attitudes displayed?

From my keen observations over the years, the answer is very simple. The learner’s attitude is tied closely to the parent’s belief systems. Those who did well had something in common. The parents of these students never give up believing in their children. Unconditional love coupled with encouraging words is the magical tools to help these children overcome all odds. In fact, these children were motivated because they knew that their parents believe in their potential. Harsh words were never used to make them feel small. On the other hand, I have seen how some parents scolded their own children before their friends for not being able to do as well academically as their friends’ kids This is very damaging in the long run as the child will give up trying after some time. A tutor cannot perform magic if the parent continues to speak “curses” into the lives of their own children. My advice will be to be more generous with praise and stingy with criticisms in the formative years of a young child’s live. It will make a great difference in the long run.

Getting a good tutor is the hardware but the heart ware comes from the parent. Do you believe your child can do it honestly? A child is not stupid and he can feel how you really feel in your heart. I will suggest that the heart ware need to be right before a tutor can come in to provide the help for your child. Do something for me and for your child today. Walk to your child now and look into his eyes. Say to him “I believe you can do it and I love you always”. Trust me that it will change your child’s live forever knowing that you are with him every step he takes in life. Have a nice day and do visit
